Cadet 150

14th March 2009 at 12:02 LinkIan Lucas

I have just discovered that Tonbridge was one of the original 8 schools where cadet units were formed in 1860. Cadet 150 is a national celebration, with events around the country: it has just been anounced that the Queen has agreed to be the patron. I hope that as one of the original schools we will be able to dream up something special, and I hope to that this could involve the OTFA. Any ideas, please.

Biennial Inspection 2009

Planning for the inspection is well under way (in fact, we're already starting to plan for 2010!). We're delighted that Air Commodore Julian Stinton (OT) has agreed to inspect us, and he will be staying on for the now traditional Annual Dinner for senior cadets. All OTs in the forces are welcome to come and join us for the day (March 11th) if possible although we can only accommodate some for the lunch and dinner - this year I've invited OTFA members in the RAF.

We're hoping to find a helicopter to bring Julian Stinton down from Waddington, and perhaps stay for some AEF flights in the afternoon. Has anyone got one??

Flt Lt Jonathan Harber RAF (VR(T))

I have been the Section Commander of Tonbridge's RAF Section since September 2004 and been involved in the running of the section since I started teaching here in September 2003. I was commissioned in 2003 when I was teaching at Berkhamsted Collegiate School in Hertfordshire.

I teach History and Politics; am Assistant Housemaster in Park House; am very involved in coaching games (rugby, fives and cricket); run the Mah Jong Society and help with the Ruston Society (the Christian meeting).

The RAF section is on good form with numbers having increased by about 50% over the last few years. We fly from RAF Wyton and glide at RAF Kenley and a number of cadets have recently done scholarships (and more hope to do so this summer). This year's summer camp is at DCAE Cosford. We've done consistently well in the Assegai Shooting Competition (for RAF CCFs) by regularly coming in the top few teams, but never quite getting first place ... perhaps this year! We've had a variety of good field days and I'm keen to offer the boys a variety of opportunities, such as visiting RAF bases and doing lots of outdoor activities.

I'm very keen to develop links with OTs to possibly arrange visits to RAF bases and particularly to arrange flying opportunities or work experience (for individual cadets) and would be delighted to hear from you if are might be able to help with this.
